PRINCE GEORGE– The Association Advocating for Women and Community has been hard at work over the winter season helping the less fortunate avoid the freezing winter temperatures.

Prince George has seen many of those temperatures which have ranged from negative 40 to plus 5 degrees. Now that the cold snap has returned homeless shelters have once again seen an uptick in clients.

Although the AWAC homeless shelter is working its hardest, they are often at full capacity. However, they’re always looking for solutions whether that entails making room for the extra residents or going out and taking some of the residents who don’t want to stay in a shelter to a heating center.

Some good news for both the shelter and the homeless though as Environment Canada expects the weather seesaw to continue and a warm spurt is expected to hit Prince George soon and last a couple of weeks or so. They also believe although it will get cold again it won’t drop into the high -20s in temperature.

AWAC also wants to remind residents if they have any extra winter gear laying around and want to make a donation they can always come down to the shelter and drop off their items to help those in need.
