Supt Wright noted, if it came to cutting the policing budget, it simply couldn’t come from the rank and file and, if cuts were made, it would have to come from the specialized units, like the Downtown Safety Unit or Car 60.

Councillor Kyle Sampson questioned how the number case counts could be on the rise, and yet the number of files forwarded to Crown is dropping.

However, Supt Wright noted that there have been changes to charge approval standards and some of the evidence simply doesn’t meet the requisite standards of charge approval.

Supt Wright also noted some of the increased stats could be attributed to a more focussed attention on the downtown with the Downtown Safety Unit and the enhanced patrols in the region.

However, Supt Wright noted that he intends to a do a deeper dive into why there are such disparities Prince George and peer communities.

Council also approved a resolution that “Administration to return a report to Council comparing the City of Prince George peer municipalities on RCMP contract costs including overtime by the third quarter of the year.”
