PRINCE GEORGE – There’s been more on the mind of Vova Pluzhnikov than just basketball.

While the UNBC Timberwolves are preparing for a playoff tilt against the Brandon Bobcats, the Ukrainian is keeping in touch with his family back home as best he can and has spent time working on a way he can support Ukraine as they face military conflict following the invasion from Russian troops.

“The last couple of days have been very difficult for me,” he said in a YouTube video announcing the event. “But it’s nothing in comparison to what my people have been dealing with. To be honest with you, I’ve been feeling helpless.”

Rather than sitting on that feeling, he’s chosen to do something in support.

On Tuesday, March 8, beginning at 6:00 a.m., Pluzhnikov will begin running 44 kilometres for the country’s population of 44-million. He’s calling the event ‘Run for Ukraine: 44km for 44 million’.

In doing so, he plans to raise funds and awareness for the issues in Ukraine, specifically the National Bank of Ukraine’s account for Humanitarian Assistance. This money will be used by the Ministry of Social Policy to provide food and shelter for refugees and displaced citizens due to military conflict.

Donations are being accepted through the Red Cross.
