PRINCE GEORGE – Year one of a three-year pilot project is in the books for a U13 female hockey development program.

The area’s BC Hockey district has wrapped its first year this past weekend after running one weekend for six months. Prince George is the first community in British Columbia to host this type of programming.

BC Hockey’s Steve O’Rourke and Theresa Phillips put on the program with the intentions of heightening the competitiveness of female hockey in Northern BC. The pair admit the area’s minor hockey associations have struggled to attract young players for rep hockey.

The athletes were evaluated and placed on teams based on skill level. The girls who are already competing at a high level are coached in a way to continue that growth in skill development. Other girls are shown methods to promote skill development in order to get them to a competitive level where they are prepared for the next level of hockey coming out of the minor associations.

According to O’Rourke, they will work to get into the Prince George Minor Hockey Association and neighbouring organizations sooner to boost numbers for their next year of programming.
