UNBC students create eco friendly kitchen kits

PRINCE GEORGE – Ann Doung, Helga Holler-Busch, Shauna Kelly and Hanna Lawrence are four UNBC students who took on the challenge laid out by the Fraser Basin Council (FBC) and created Eco Living Kitchen (ELK).

ELK is a group dedicated to helping people live greener lives in the kitchen. ELK partnered with several organizations including Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society, The Prince George Public Interest Research group and the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society to help create home kits.

The home kits were given out to 75 Prince George residents and provided low-waste and locally-sourced options for the kitchen.

The kits were free, thanks to funding from FBC. ELC also provided follow up workshops for the residents.

Each workshop focused on providing skills to help cut down on kitchen waste. Skills including canning, composting and cooking with scraps.

The students behind ELK were so successful in their first venture they managed another impressive feat.

They entered the Nourishing Innovation Initiative: Campus Nutrition and Food Security Contest and took home the largest cash prize of the 8 teams that entered.

ELK is still hosting monthly workshops including one on March 18, 2022 about cooking persian style food.
