PRINCE GEORGE – Dakota Williams is a member of the Tahltan First Nation. He also served in the Canadian Armed Forces from September 2011 to August 2019. Williams is currently serving as a Stewardship Officer for Tahltan.

Even, though Williams retired in 2019, he always knew he would be back in a war zone eventually.

“I just finished the paperwork for my passport to sign up for the Ukrainian Foreign Legion. The Ukrainian president opened it up to all western military veterans. Anyone with military experience can sign up to defend Ukraine.”

The Russians invaded Ukraine on February 28 and just days later Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky put out the call for International volunteers to join Ukrainians on the front lines.

“Every friend of Ukraine who wants to join Ukraine in defending the country please come over, we will give you weapons.”

Now, Williams prepares for his travels, he has just signed the documents to renew his passport. He hopes the government will fast-track it, so he can leave as soon as possible.

” Fear is a choice ultimately, we all feel it just like every other emotion and we have to honour those feelings,” said Williams. “And, no matter what we do in this life, no one comes out of it alive. The only people that live forever are tyrants and heroes and this our choice and our time to choose who you are in this life.”

As of March 3, over 16,0000 people have signed up to help defend Ukraine. Williams says, of those 16,0000, 550 are Canadians.
