Street sweeping starting in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE – As the temperature rises and the snow melts away from the streets, air quality becomes a big concern for the City.

In an average winter, approximately 7,500 to 10,000 tonnes of sand and aggregate are spread out on city roads and sidewalks to help with traction.

That material ends up left on the roads to be cleaned up in the springtime.

Spring cleaning by the City will begin when the snow is cleared from gutter to gutter on priority 1 and 2 routes.

Temperatures must also be warm enough that dust suppressant liquids can be used without the risk of freezing over.

According to the City’s highway bylaws, residents and businesses cannot sweep or deposit materials like sand and gravel into the street.

The City also asks that they do not sweep on days with poor air quality. Lingering dust from parking lots can make already bad days worse if proper procedures are not followed.

The City has already begun some sweeping in the previous days.
