Tennis court locked

No tennis, no fun, for the Buckhorn community

PRINCE GEORGE – Four years ago, some residents of Buckhorn banded together to revive the tennis courts located near their community elementary school.

However, access to the court was locked, upsetting those wanting the facility re-opened.

The issue goes back several years when the surrounding community built an enclosed tennis court and then gifted it to School District 57. And according to Rose Verkaik, a resident of Buckhorn, at times in recent years, a team of people would maintain them.

The maintenance came to a standstill, though, as School District 57 limited access to the court by installing locks on the gates.

School District 57 communication Frank Peebles says the locks were placed on the gates because the courts are unsafe.

Undeterred, the Buckhorn community group wants to enter into a user agreement with the school district but has not heard back for several years.

According to Peebles, COVID-19 changed its priority list, and user group agreements will begin to roll forward.
