PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George has recently become a training centre for ambulance paramedics who want to step up their skill set to service the north with a higher level of care.

In BC, the British Columbia Emergency Service provides specialized emergency patient care and transport for critically ill or injured patients. Some of those paramedics have specialized training to help patients.

Historically BCHS offered the critical care paramedic training program almost exclusively in the lower mainland. A critical care paramedic training program started in Prince George in the past few months.

According to the BCHS, the critical care transport program in BC is the second-busiest in North America. In 2017 and 2018, the critical care paramedics transported over 6,000 patients by air ambulance and over 2,000 by ground ambulance.

Deb Trumbley with BCHS says Prince George has the potential to grow as a paramedic training centre.

There are around ten critical care paramedics based in Prince George that service all of BC’s north.
