Canada’s World Cup berth looks to have affect on soccer here in the North

PRINCE GEORGE– The Canadian men’s soccer team is heading to the world cup for the first time in 36 years. 1986, That’s the last time the men’s soccer team qualified for the world cup. However, on Sunday the team took to the field to beat Jamaica 4-0 and punch their ticket to Qatar.

It was shocking for many to see this team shoot to the top of the table beating teams like Mexico and the United States for a country known for “hockey”. However, after this performance, the narrative might be changing.

Terrol Russell is the director of Club operations for the Prince George Youth Soccer Association. A place where youth can develop their skills and learn the game of soccer. and after this historic run on the national level, the hope is it’s inspired youth wanting to chase the dream of becoming the next Jonathan David or Alphonso Davies.

The best part is Canada clinched their world cup berth just ahead of soccer season in Northern BC. An opportunity for PGYSA to help capitalize on something that hopefully becomes the norm on the national level.

Despite clinching, Canada faces off against Panama in their final qualifying game tomorrow night. The Canadians will then find out who they play in Qatar this Friday when the groups are drawn before the actual tournament takes place in November
