Indigenous artist teaches Indigenous song and dance to Pinewood students

PRINCE GEORGE – Pinewood Elementary students performed in front of parents and community members on Thursday after more than 10 weeks of Indigenous song and dance lessons.

Well-known Indigenous Multidisciplinary Artist Candice George taught the students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 over 10 weeks.

“I think what I love the most about this project is that it connects children, it connects children to our language and to our culture,” said George. “It helps non-Indigenous children understand the beauty of Indigenous culture and Indigenous language.

George also said it connects urban Aboriginal children who may be miles away from their roots.

George is a member of the Stellat’en First Nation and comes from a matrilineal society, born into the Kilweneetz’en (Little man) house, a sub-house crest within the caribou clan.

The lessons included traditional Indigenous songs from across the region.

The project was funded by a grant application and part by the Pinewood Parent Advisory Council, which allowed drums to be purchased, staying within the school for years to come.

This just another example of a strong push by School District 57 for reconciliation within the public school system.
