One dead, one in critical condition after ammonia leak in Kamloops

TK’EMLUPS — At least one person has died after an ammonia leak at a business in the Mount Paul Industrial Park Thursday morning (May 26).

Kamloops Fire Rescue and B.C. Ambulance Service personnel rushed to the area of Carrier Street and Sarcee Street at about 10:45 a.m. for the report of an ammonia leak stemming from a building.

The City of Kamloops has confirmed that the situation resulted in the death of one person. Another person is in critical condition.

B.C. Emergency Health Services provided these details:

One patient was transported to hospital in critical condition. Two patients were transported to hospital in stable condition. About six other patients in stable condition were assessed on scene.

Interior Health provided this statement to CFJC Today:

Interior Health can confirm that Royal Inland Hospital has made preparations to receive patients from an incident in Kamloops. We do not have details about the incident itself, but at this point we have been notified that approximately eight patients are being brought to the hospital. We ask that people with non-urgent needs avoid coming to the emergency department while we address this current situation.

The cause of the leak is not yet apparent.

In a social media post, the City of Kamloops asks the public to stay away from the area of the Mount Paul Industrial Park while authorities investigate and deal with the situation.
