PRINCE GEORGE—Local Soldier Eric Depenau received prestigious recognition from the Canadian Armed Forces for actions during an operation in May 2020.

Depenau, who holds the rank of Captain, is presently the Second in Command of Bravo Company of the Rocky Mountain Rangers, the local reserve infantry unit. He received the Command Commendation on behalf of the Canadian Joint Operations Command in a private ceremony this past weekend.

“I am glad that we were able to be in the right place at the right time to make sure that no one was injured and that the situation did not get worse, I am sure the driver of the vehicle was shocked to see a platoon of soldiers coming to her aide,” said Depenau

On May 15, 2020 Depenau and his platoon arrived upon a vehicle on fire with occupants still inside. Depenau directed his platoon and successfully rescued the vehicle’s occupants and prevented the fire from spreading.

“I believe that for every person that is recognized with an honour like this, there is a team of people who contributed to that success. In this case, I have to thank the soldiers who were present for executing directions swiftly, enabling our team to take control of an emergency. Many have done far more in service and it is an honor to receive this (award), and stand amongst those recognized,” said Depenau

The original presentation was scheduled for shortly after the approval of the award but was delayed due to Captain Depenau being deployed to the Middle East on Operation Impact for most of 2021.
