PRINCE GEORGE – With Council’s approval, the City will forge ahead with an application for funds under the Building Safer Communities Funding.

The $250 million-dollar fund will “… address the conditions that contribute to a young person falling in with crime.” “The program will provide funds, through 2025-26, to eligible municipalities and Indigenous communities. Municipalities will then distribute funds to local organizations that focus on children, youth and young adults who are involved in or at risk of joining gangs.”

The City of Prince George was identified as being eligible for $1.8 million from that fund.

There were questions around Council Chambers as to how the money would be allocated and who would be doing the allocating. it was noted the details were undefined as the fund was only announced in mid-March. However, Administration did note that, if the application were successful, the money would be overseen by the City and allocated to various different social agencies.
