Major development proposed for Hart Highway by Kidd Group

PRINCE GEORGE – For the last 30 years there hasn’t been much in the form of apartments for residents in the Hart area of Prince George, but that could soon change.

A new $80 million development slated to be called the Northside Crossing is planned for 7171 Hart Highway next to Day & Night Foods.

“The Hart Highway is predominantly really short on apartment space,” said Bruce Kidd, President of the Kidd Group. “We want to have a mixed-use development so we’ll have commercial on the bottom and the top four floors will be apartments.”

The project will move in phases with the first phase set to bring 60 apartment units and 10 commercial with plans to grow that number over a period of years.

The last apartment building built in the Hart is believed to have been opened sometime in the 1980s near Save-On-Foods on Austin Road.

Neighbours across the highway from the proposed development see great potential for all ages including seniors, especially those with transportation issues.

Lorraine Prouse, President of the Hart Pioneer Centre said to see that acreage finally developed is exciting and could be a real asset for seniors living in the Hart while community members of all ages can benefit.

Bruce Kidd said he hopes the commercial space will bring many missing amenities to the north side of Prince George including a fitness centre and a potential medical centre with added retail and food areas.

Some spoke to CKPG News on Monday concerned about the loss in green space, although understand fully how needed something like this is in the area.

The proposal will have to go before city council to have zoning approved from commercial to mixed-use zoning for residential units.
