PRINCE GEORGE- The Prince George Public Library hosted the first-ever Bike Fest in Canada Games Plaza on Saturday. The event was open to everyone to come down and be educated on bike safety.

“It is a chance to come out and learn some things about biking, learning what you need to get started, as well as just come out for some food, some prize draws and just have fun while you’re here,” said Daniel Soares of the Prince George Public Library. ” Summer has just come around, and this is the perfect time to get on your bike and biking and safety go hand in hand.”

The event had many groups with tents set up, including the Brain Injured Group spreading awareness on bike safety.

“More people are riding their bikes in the nicer weather, but there isn’t enough education out there,” says Tia Doerksen of the Brain Injured Group.

The Brain Injured Group’s main message was the importance of a helmet when riding this summer.

“How to properly fit a helmet is really important,” said Doerksen. “Helmets aren’t a one size fits all deal, so it really goes with like the size of your head, the shape.”

Other groups at the event included Cops for Cancer, who rode stationary bikes the entire morning, raising money for their tour from Dawson Creek to Williams lake in September. The tour will raise money for pediatric cancer research and send kids to Camp Good Times.

The library told CKPG News that they plan on turning Bike Fest into an annual event and hope it continues to grow each year.
