PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George City Council will review a report from the Advisory Committee on Council Remuneration at a meeting Monday (June 27).

The report includes recommendations on salaries and benefits for city council.

The advisory committee is made up of Prince George community members Deborah Abraham, Ethan Anderson, Kyanna Coe, Solomon Kpeh, and Martin Taylor. They met on five occasions to review material and ensure that pay, benefits and expense allowances are reasonable and fall in line with other municipalities of similar size and population.

The committee reviewed Langley, Delta, North Vancouver, Saanich, Victoria, Nanaimo, Kelowna and Kamloops, all of which have between 91,000 and 149,000 population. Prince George has around 82,000.

The current remuneration for Prince George’s mayor is the fourth highest among the nine municipalities at $129,461 annually. PG councillors get paid the least of the nine at $37,908.

The report going to council says the Mayor’s salary is “very close” to average while the councillor salary is only 76 per cent of market average.

The City of Prince George also provides a $750 monthly vehicle allowance to the Mayor, in line with three of the other municipalities. Currently, councillors do not get a vehicle allowance.

The advisory committee is recommending that the Mayor’s pay be increased by one per cent and councillors pay go up 3.5 per cent on top of the annual wage adjustment.

The annual wage adjustment is based on numbers reported by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. They find the “Average Annual Percentage Wage Adjustments by Quarter” by taking the average wage raise of the fourth quarter of the previous year and the first three quarters of the current year for the public administration industry.

The committee also recommends reimbursing council members up to $40 a day for childcare while attending council meetings and events.

In addition, councillors would get a vehicle allowance of $250 a month if council follows all recommendations.

Prince George council will discuss these pay changes on Monday.
