PRINCE GEORGE – Two hundred mats have arrived at Harwin Elementary School… set to be cleaned up and ready to accommodate athletes for the BC Summer Games. It is one of 13 schools that will play home to the thousands heading here for the Games.

“All various athletes from rugby, wrestling, baseball, equestrian. Every school has different sets of athletes,” explains Brenda Anderson, the Chair of Site Prep for the Games.

School District 57 is one of the partners in hosting the Games in just over two weeks’ time and will provide venues for sporting events as well as accommodation.

“There’s baseball fields involved, the gyms are used for wrestling, basketball, there’s outdoor volleyball.”

Some of the more common and expected venues are Masich Place Stadium for track and field events, the Aquatic Centre, and West Lake for canoeing and kayaking competitions. In fact, there are a total of 21 different venues for the Games.

“One of the best things about Prince George is that most of our venues are competition ready,” explains Renee McCloskey, President of the BC Summer Games Society. “Now that the Games are just a couple of weeks away, we just making some minor modifications like we using the soccer fields for rugby so we just need to bring in some different nets. That’s the kind of work that’s happening over the next couple of weeks.”
