City to brand itself

PRINCE GEORGE – “Yeah. I’m from Prince George and I’m proud of it.”

The mayor of this community makes no bones about it. And there are tonnes of others who feel the same way. But Prince George seems to have something of an identity crisis.

“Drive into town and there’s this sign that says we’re the Northern capital. And then I heard that we’re the Northern gateway. And then I also heard that we’re not in the North. So that’s awkward,” explains Julie Rogers, Manager of Communications. “So, Phase One is just trying to figure out what it is that the people of Prince George love about Prince George.”

But Rogers and her team plan to change that. They are looking at branding the City. The City of Kamloops calls itself the Tournament Capital, while Fort St. John touts itself as the Energetic City. The City’s logo represents the convergence of two rivers. But this is different.

“It’s more than a logo. It’s a feeling. And it’s a personality. If Prince George was a personality, what would it be? Would we be funny? Would we be super-high-tech? Are we a city of the arts? If it one thing, what is that one thing?”

We love Mr. PG so much, we have stuffed versions of the guy. But we seem not to toot our own horn about why we love the city nearly enough. The City would like folks to put together a little 100-word or less description of your favourite things about Prince George.

We’re also going to be launching a survey, a very short survey, where people can share their feelings, not just about how they feel about Prince George now, but where they see us going. What direction are we going to be taking? So that we can plan for the future.”

But that’s the first step. What happens after that, Phase Two, will depend entirely on what comes from this first collection of information. And, while some communities may want to spend big bucks on a consultant.

“We would prefer to do Phase One, do some research, find out about Prince George, start to draft the Prince George story.”

Mayor Lyn Hall has some personal favourites.

“When you talk about branding, I think about being a hub city or BC’s Northern capital,” says Mayor Hall. “I’m not saying that is what we have to have. But those are two major components when you talk about a brand.”
