With six charter flights, and 42 buses packed full of athletes headed to Prince George this week, the economic impact of the Summer Games on the tourism industry in Prince George is massive.

“An event like this typically brings around $2 million into any community hosting,” said Carson.

“We’re going to feel it,” said Renee McCloskey, the Prince George BC Summer Games president. “Three thousand participants coming, the majority of those are bringing with them friends and families that are will be staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants, shopping at our stores.”

Even though gas prices are at an all-time high, Tourism Prince George says that hasn’t deterred families from coming to town.

“I think that what we’re seeing coming out into the spring and summer is there’s just this really big pent-up demand for travel, and although the gas prices are high and there are some other circumstances, it doesn’t seem to be impacting people’s travel plans,” said Carson.

The BC Summer Games kick off across 21 different venues Thursday.
