Province continues to support the north

PRINCE GEORGE- The Province is investing in the growing communities of Northern B.C, focusing on supporting social, health and community services in areas experiencing rapid economic growth.

“This is a $25 million fund, and it goes right across the entire north,” said The Minister of Municipal Affairs, Nathan Cullen. “We’ve put out 46 projects so far, and this round has another 14 projects.”

A fund that is already making an impact in our community.

“Here in Prince George. Over the last two intakes, we’ve seen funding for language training for new immigrants coming to the community,” said Joel McKay, the CEO of Northern Development. “The Prince George Sexual Assault Center has also received funding for a trauma-informed counselling service. As well, the Hospice Society has received some funding.”

Cullen and McKay are both excited about this funding because it is laid out for years to come, providing a sense of reassurance.

“That allows communities to plan,” said Cullen. ” A local government or nonprofit can look forward to this over the next three or four years.”

With 14 projects in the works for this intake, Northern Development is always looking for more funding applications.

“We’d like to see more applications. The funding is available to communities across the north,” said McKay. ” I would encourage any nonprofit local government or indigenous government out there that has capacity constraints and is feeling the impacts of significant projects and needs to adjust to that growth to give us a call.”
