Long-time city councillor not seeking re-election

PRINCE GEORGE — After 23 years on Prince George City Council, Murry Krause has decided not to run for re-election this fall.

“It wasn’t an easy decision but I think the time is right for me. So, I’m looking forward to what the future brings and I’m excited about what the new council will bring to the city and the community.”

He says he agonized over the decision but admits four year terms make it a difficult commitment to make, especially at his age.

“If I was successful in the next election I’d be 76 by the end of the term. Four year terms are a challenge for a lot of people and we’re finding out through B.C. that four years terms are just a long term and I would never want to run on the idea I would only stay for a couple of years.”

Asked about his biggest highlight in all his years on council, he said it was his recommendation to rename Fort George Park Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park in 2015.

“I think that decision rolled out the way it should have. Some people insisted on more public consultation but I’m not sure what more public consultation would have brought except more divisiveness. So, I’m really pleased the way we did it – we bit-the-bullet and did it.”

Looking ahead, what’s next?

“I have been involved in social justice work and to a lesser degree the arts for over 50 years. With the free time I will now have, I hope to return to my roots and continue to make a contribution to a healthy community in the community I was born, and that I love.”
