Back-to-school rules are back

PRINCE GEORGE – The schools all over town are quiet right now, but that won’t be the case on Tuesday morning when the kids are back in school for half a day to start. It means motorists in particular need to be hyper-vigilant.

“Kids are so excited with back-to-school,” says Laura Weller, Chair of the District Parent Advisory Council. “They are not always paying attention. We need to make sure our gorwn-up traffic safety as drivers is impeccable to keep our kids safe.”

That means:

*School zone speed limits are now back in effect. That’s 30 kilometres per hour in all marked school zones, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on all regular school days.

*Do not park inside or over a designated crosswalk.

*Do not pass a stopped vehicle that is allowing pedestrians to cross the street.

Weller says there are a lot of rural students in this district that ride the bus to and from school and there are safety rules around that as well.

“Our rural bus system is really important. So when the school bus lights are flashing and the stop sign is out, stop in both distractions. It’s really important. It’s one of the biggest complaints we hear at the start of the year and throughout the year.”

Back to classes without any restrictions from the Provincial Health Office and that’s fine, says the President of the Prince George District Teachers Association, for the teachers in the classrooms.

“There really isn’t any special protocol in place,” says Daryl Beauregard, President, Prince George District Teachers Association. “And I know that, in our district, it’s encouraged that don’t come to school if you’re sick. With anything. That’s normal. Wash your hands and if folks do want to wear a mask, they’re going to be supported. But it’s not mandatory.”

For many, this is one of the most exciting times of the year, as kids hook up with friends they may not have seen all summer long. But let’s all be mindful of motoring ways from here on out.
