PRINCE GEORGE — Some residents of northern B.C. are being ordered to evacuate as of Saturday (Sept. 3) due to a number of aggressive fires in the Prince George Fire Centre.

The district of Hudson’s Hope has issued an evacuation order for the area highlighted in red on the map below. An evacuation order means residents must leave immediately. The areas in yellow are under evacuation alert, which means residents should prepare to evacuate though it is not mandatory.

The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) has also ordered evacuation for parts of the district:

  • North shore of Williston Lake
  • Table Creek south to Dowling Creek (8km west of the WAC Bennett Dam, 40km Johnson FSR)
  • Southwest following Dowling Creek to the intersection of McAllister Creek
  • West to approximately 10km West of Peck Creek
  • North to Williston Lake

Residents in the following areas are under evacuation alert:

  • Twelve Mile Rd., Dunley Rd., Eagle Heights Dr., & Aspen Ridge Dr.
  • Beryl Prairie Rd. & Haagsman St.
  • Farrell Creek Rd., Simonsen Ave., & Lahagarte Rd.
  • East of Johnson Creek FSR at 40km until Highway 29 and North until Hudson’s Hope from the Johnson Creek FSR along Highway 29.

The PRRD says those evacuating should “follow the Johnson Creek Forest Service Road (FSR) East to Highway 29 and continue to a safe location.”

The evacuation orders and alerts are due to the Battleship Mountain wildfire, which is burning out of control at more than 10,000 hectares about 50 kilometres west of Hudson’s Hope.

Saturday the fire behaved aggressively at a rank 4 level thanks to wind, as well as hot and dry conditions. Winds are expected to reach up to 70 km/hr on Sunday which could increase fire spread to 30 metres per minute, according to the Peace River Regional District.
