Mayoral candidates clash at UNBC

PRINCE GEORGE- Four of the six mayoral candidates were at UNBC Saturday night for a forum hosted by The Northern Labour Council.

The moderator asked each candidate the same questions throughout the evening; downtown was a hot topic.

“The downtown has some serious problems, but much of the ability to deal with the problems of the downtown regarding homeless people rests with the provincial government,” said Roy Stewart. “That’s where we must concentrate our efforts to get a solution.”

“It Is going to take money, and it’s going to take political will. It’s going to take having the services that are necessary, which is included, which include housing, abstinence programs and safe supply,” said McConnachie.

Another topic brought up and discussed in much detail is how the candidates would ensure that projects throughout Prince George would be done within budget and on time.

“Having the right consultants and understanding of the program, what type of infrastructure we need and the maintenance budget in a long-term plan,” said Simon Yu. “These are all intertwined, very important issues. I would like to see most of the infrastructure efforts from the city definitely should stay in the city.”

The moderator also brought up the financial status of Prince George Saturday night.

“In my opinion, we have to look at creative ways to cut the fat city hall, streamline processes, increase efficiencies, and reduce the burden on taxpayers,” said Adam Hyatt. “I think we need to hold city hall accountable.”
