Northern Health encourages everyone to get vaccinated ahead of the holiday season

PRINCE GEORGE — Northern Health is encouraging everyone and especially those with young children to get vaccinated as part of their holiday preparation.

The BC Centers for Disease Control confirmed on Wednesday that six children died in BC in November due to flu-related illness, way above the yearly average. Minister of health Adrian Dix calls the situation a tragedy.

The health authority will be holding drop-in influenza clinics for children across the North.

Dr. Jong Kim, Chief Medical Health Officer at Northern Health, says:

“As families prepare for the holidays, we strongly recommend they get their children and themselves vaccinated for influenza as soon as possible as it takes about two weeks for the vaccination to be fully effective. Local teams are working hard to provide drop-in options for families this Friday and Saturday. Booked appointments for influenza vaccines continue to be available.” – Dr. Jong Kim, Chief Medical Health Officer, Northern Health Authority

Data has shown that an average five to six kids died per flu season nationally between 2010 and 2019 and no flu deaths were recorded among children in 2020 or 2021. So far, Northern Health has a total of 14 drop in flu clinics scheduled across the entire region in the coming days.

Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are also available at participating local pharmacies. Register for your COVID-19 and flu vaccine and book your appointment through the Get Vaccinated system or call 1-833-838-2323 (toll free).
