PRINCE GEORGE– Figure Skaters from all over Northern BC have gathered in Wiliams lake for the 2023 CNC Regional Championships. The Prince George Figure Skating Club will send over 20 skaters to the Regional competition. It’s the first time since 2020 the event has been held in person due to the Covid Pandemic and many skaters are looking forward to competing on the big stage again.

One of those skaters is 11-year-old Emily Benwell who will be competing in the Individual Showcase & the STAR Free Skate. Before a big competition like this, it can cause nerves but also excitement. But getting to compete around the province is one of Emily’s favorite parts about the sport.

“I like going to different towns and competing and obviously regionals, and just going out there with everyone is super fun.” – Emily Benwell, Prince George Figure Skating Club

Another skater competing this weekend is 13-year-old Violet Freeman-Idemilih. Like every athlete, her routine needs practice, and she took the ice to perfect her routines and edges before taking off to compete.

“We run our solos and our artistics as well as our showcases. We like practice” – Violet Freeman-Idemilih, Prince George Figure Skating Club

One of those people to help the skaters perfect their routine is Ferenc Kassai. The Coach from Europe came to Prince George to be a part of the Figure Skating Club and will be taking part in his first regionals this year. He admits it’s a bit nerve-racking but he is preparing his athletes and hopes that they just have fun out there.

“The goal is that they enjoy the competition and so that’s for me is the most important thing. That they have good experience and they’re competing for themselves, and not against each other.” – Ferenc Kassai, Coach

The competition wraps up on Sunday and will all be taking place at the Cariboo Memorial Arena in Williams Lake.
