PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars are coming home from the Prairies on a winning note.

After going 1-3-1 in five games with stops in Lethbridge, Swift Current, Medicine Hat, Calgary, and Red Deer, the Cougars wrapped up their road trip with a 4-3 overtime win over the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Trailing 1-0 after the first period, a net-front Koehn Ziemmer put the puck into a wide-open net to tie the game briefly in the second, but not before the Oil Kings retook the lead 2-1 heading into the third.

But two quick goals in the third period turned the tables. Ziemmer moved across the Oil Kings’ zone off the rush to set up Zac Funk, who scored on the backhand, to tie it again 2-2. Ziemmer would strike again with a wrist shot from the right circle to give the Cougars their first lead.

Although a lengthy road trip had to be a few moments longer. The Oil Kings tied the game less than five minutes remaining to force overtime.

Thankfully, for the Cougars, overtime didn’t take up much time. Jaxsen Wiebe set up Chase Wheatcroft in the slot for the overtime winner just 46 seconds in.

The Cougars improve their record to 19-20-4-0, good for 42 points in 43 games. They’re second in the Western Hockey League B.C. Division and sixth in the Western Conference.

Next up is a Saturday night (Jan. 28) home game against the Prince Albert Raiders. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. from Sandman Centre.
