Staff shortages still affecting hotel industry in Prince George and B.C.

Feb 17, 2023 | 4:03 PM

PRINCE GEORGE — The hotel industry is slowly rebounding from the COVID-19 pandemic, but there are still issues facing hotels across the province and here in Prince George specifically, but the most recent numbers show that business is picking up.

“We’ve been doing better than expected. Last year was not bad at all. And 2023, we’re predicting, like tourism is coming back unless something crazy happens in the world, of course. But we have more tour groups bookings again and more by groups and hunting groups and fishing groups and whatnot. Summer looks really great.” – Elke Hierl-Steinbauer, Bon Voyage Inn

However, staffing shortages still continue to plague hotels.

“At the moment our main issue is definitely staffing, and that’s all over the place… During COVID, we had to let a whole bunch of people go, obviously, because we didn’t have enough work for them.” – Elke Hierl-Steinbauer, Bon Voyage Inn

Ingrid Jarrett, president and ceo of the bc hotel association, says that the situation varies across the province.

“There are waves within certain areas within the province that are recovering more quickly than others. You know, we’ve seen the domestic travel, of course, has been quite robust.” – Ingrid Jarrett, President & CEO, BC Hotel Association

Provincially, Jarrett says that hotels are still lacking certain demographics of customers.

“And were lacking U.S. travelers were lacking international travelers. Certainly government is not traveling like they were before.” – Ingrid Jarrett

With the 2023 BC Tourism and Hospitality Conference taking place in Prince George from March 1st to 3rd, the discussion surrounding staff shortages, and other issues in the industry will be forefront.
