UNBC Women’s basketball season ends after tough loss to Cascades

EDMONTON — It was a back and forth battle between the Timberwolves and the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday (Feb.17) but it was the Cascades who ultimately came out victorious, winning the single elimination playoff match 77-70.

The first quarter saw the Timberwolves shooting 50 per cent from field goal range with the help of Alina Shakirova, who shot 6-14 from inside the three point line as part of her 17 point performance. The Timberwolves as a result would be up 16-15 after one quarter of play.

The Cascades fought back in the second, outscoring the Timberwolves 23-15 with the aid of Maddy Gobeil, who put up a game-high 26 points as her team would go up 38-31 heading into the second half.

And then it was the Timberwolves turn to outscore the Cascades once again, scoring 22 points out of Fraser Valley’s 13 to put themselves up 53-51 going into the final quarter.
