Wheatcroft’s 3 point performance helps Cougars win three in a row over the Giants

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars are trending in the right direction after Friday’s (Feb.24) victory, earning their third in a row after defeating the Vancouver Giants 5-4 in overtime.

The Giants got off to a solid start in the first period as Skyler Bruce would tally his 9th of the season. Eight minutes later, Chase Wheatcroft would score his 35th of the season on the power play to settle the score at 1-1 heading into the end of the first period.

The Giants came out of the gates red hot in the second period. Scoring two goals in the first 90 seconds of the frame thanks to Ty Thorpe and Jaden Lipinski to give themselves a 3-1 lead.

The Cougars however would fire back midway through the period with a goal spree of their own, scoring three in just under three minutes of play to take a 4-3 lead heading into the third period.

Skyler Bruce would score his second of the contest at 4:42 of the third period to even the score a four which would result in some overtime action.

Chase Wheatcroft would play hero for Prince George by also scoring his second of the contest and the game winner as the Cougars improve to 27-23-4 on the campaign.

Next up for the club is a showdown in Victoria as they get set to face the Royals on Saturday (Feb.25) at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
