VANDERHOOF — Police in Vanderhoof are warning the public about a sextortion scam.
On Monday, February 27, Vanderhoof RCMP received a report of sextortion attempt from a local resident. The victim reportedly sent intimate photos on a social media platform to someone they had only met online. The victim began receiving threatening phone calls from an unknown man demanding money, and threatened to release the photos to family and friends if they didn’t pay them the money.
Cpl. Steven McLean says that RCMP urges “the public not to share intimate photos through social media or online, even if you know and trust the recipient… Once those images have been sent, you lose all control of how they might be used.”
If you are the victim of sextortion, police advise that you immediately block the suspect on all social media platforms and contact your local police.
