To Your Health: Bivalent Boosters

PRINCE GEORGE — It has been three years since COVID-19 shuttered the world to a halt, and it is still with us. In those 3 years, the virus has evolved and so has the science behind it. Bivalent boosters are now available, meaning that the vaccine can better target different variants.

Essentially what Bivalent kind of stands for is it means there’s two components to the vaccine. So as we’ve seen with the COVID pandemic, there has been variants that have developed. So the Bivalent vaccine has the original COVID vaccine in it, as well as a kind of variant portion. So the variant that’s in the two bilingual valent vaccines that we have in Canada is the Omicron.” – Brianna Pallot

The original strain of covid-19 is not circulating as much as newer variants are.

“We don’t really see the original COVID strain circulating all that much anymore. So it has that extra kind of added benefit for people.” – Brianna Palloy

If you get infected with covid, you do have natural immunity for around 3 months.

“There’s definitely natural immunity. Once you have been exposed and had COVID. So in general it lasts about can be 3 to 6 months. So the earliest I usually recommend people get a booster is about three months after. Just because you do have that natural immunity from the shot, there’s no harm in getting it earlier. Just as long as you are feeling 100% and not experiencing any COVID symptoms.” – Brianna Pallot

Be sure to check with a pharmacist or the BC government covid-19 website before getting a booster dose.
