PRINCE GEORGE– The Prince George Cougars are playoff bound for the 2nd year in a row. After going down to the wire last season it’s a great feeling for players to know they have clinched a spot with 13 games to go.

“It’s a big accomplishment. Last year it happened last game of the year. This year we got some games left to move up in the standings. So I think it was pretty exciting to hear that news. But there’s still a lot of season left and we’re still trying to climb the standings.” – Tyler Brennan, Cougars Goaltender

With there still work to be done the Cougars know how important it is to keep on track and not slow down. The team is 8-2 in their last 10 and is hoping to close out these last 13 games on a positive note while also trying to move up in the Western Conference.

“I think just play our way and get on a bit of a roll going in the playoffs. In the grand scheme of things, the regular season doesn’t mean much its all about the playoffs. So get as high of a position as we can, then come out fighting in the first couple of games of playoffs and see how far we can take this thing.” –Chase Wheatcroft, Leads Cougars in Goals & Points.

Last year not a single player on the roster had played in a single playoff game. This year around the story is different after battling the Portland Winterhawks in a 4 game series and acquiring two players with many playoff games under their belt. One of those players is Jaxson Weibe who was part of the Edmonton Oil Kings team that headed to the Memorial Cup last year. An experience he’s hoping to share with his teammates.

“It was a super unique experience with the Oil Kings. I’ll never forget going to the Memorial Cup in my junior career. I think something I can do is bring that experience to this group. And, if anyone needs to lean on someone, I’m there and I can give my two cents of those guys about the playoffs.” –Jaxsen Wiebe, WHL Champion last year with Oil Kings.

Over these next 13 games, Prince George only faces one team with a winning record so players and coaches are looking to take advantage of the opportunity ahead. The last time Prince George won a playoff game was in 2017.
