PRINCE GEORGE – The building boom certainly had an impact on the industrial sector in Prince George.

While the city saw steady numbers for single-family and multi-family dwellings, the industry and commercial categories soared.

According to the City of Prince George, 34 industrial permits were approved in 2022, up from just 5 in 2021 an increase of 580%.

“We are at the mouth of an energy superhighway,” said Mayor Simon Yu. “When the power starts being generated from Site C, we will have an additional 1100 megawatts running through our region, and in 2025 the LNG will be complete to Kitimat adding to our opportunity.”

Major projects such as Hydra Energy, Arbios, and the new Tidewater Renewables facility headlined a long list of new projects. The area with the most concentrated level of activity was the city’s new industrial park located off Boundary Road near Highway 97.

Commercial permits also saw a jump, up from 6 in 2021 to 14 in 2022.

Marleen Morris, Co-Director at the Community Development Institute at UNBC said the increase in permits being approved for industries is a good sign for the future growth of housing and commercial sectors which usually trail behind.
