SD57 working to keep improving student outcomes

PRINCE GEORGE – School District 57 staff continue to work tirelessly to try and improve their grad rates, and student learning overall.

Part of that effort includes two resource teachers who help classroom teachers across SD57.

Nancy Reid, the SD57 Literacy Resource Teacher said she has seen big improvements in her time. Reid said the literacy program for teachers has grown exponentially since she took over eight years ago.

“When we look at what literacy is, it is probably one of if not the most complex things that teachers have to take on,” said Reid.

SD57 has struggled in literacy and numeracy scores in the past, but recently the signs point towards a change in that trend. Grade 4 and Grade 7 Foundational Skill Assessment scores are now within the provincial range.

Completion rates for students are still below average for SD57, something senior administration is aware of, and keen to improve.

Superintendent Cindy Heitman said her goal is to see 10% more students at or above the provincial average, but ultimately she would love to see all the students succeed.

“We are seeing a trend of growth in our literacy and numeracy rates, you can see that information in our framework report that’s published on an annual basis and we track that not only in the elementary grades but up to the secondary grades as well in the graduation assessments, in literacy and numeracy,” said Heitman.

Heitman said the recently released rankings from the Fraser Institute which use 2020/21 school year statistics do not paint a true picture of school results.
