PRINCE GEORGE — When you walk into a pharmacy looking for pain medication, it can be hard to tell what is what. We learn more on pain medications in this week’s to your health.

When looking for pain relief, you are given a wide variety of different medications over the counter at a pharmacy, but each one is different from another. Ibuprofen is just one type of an over the counter pain medication you might use.

“We generally think of ibuprofen as or Advil, Motrin as more of an anti-inflammatory. So good for conditions where you’ve had an injury… Maybe there’s some inflammation and it’ll help relieve that inflammation and the pain. Tylenol or acetaminophen has different uses than ibuprofen, like Advil or Motrin and then Tylenol we think of as not an anti-inflammatory, but still good for pain. And it’s often used for arthritis and it has a little better side effect profile for some people. So sometimes that’s worth discussing with the pharmacist about it.” – Chris Pallot, Pharmacist, Third Avenue Pharmacy

Tylenol, or acetaminophen, has different uses than ibuprofen like Advil or Motrin. Naproxen, like Aleve, is another anti-inflammatory over the counter medication. Some cough and cold medications do contain ibuprofen or acetaminophen, so it may be a good idea to check with a pharmacist if you are unsure of what to take. When it comes to over the counter pain medication, many have personal preferences when it comes to using advil or tylenol for instance.
