PRINCE GEORGE — Members of the public are being honoured by the BC Highway Patrol for their efforts during an incident that occurred two weekends ago.

Two members of the public were appreciated today at the North District RCMP Detachment. Wilmar Salaza and Robert Wheeler were two of three members of the public who stopped to assist a police officer who was being violently assaulted by a suspect on Saturday, March 25th. Chief Superintendent Holly Turton spoke of how those individuals stepping in prevented the situation from getting worse.

“Importantly, their actions also ensured that the officer was not injured more seriously. Something that I’m incredibly thankful for. What is incredible about the actions of these individuals was that they jumped in to assist, knowing full well that they were putting themselves at risk.” – Chief Superintendent Holly Turton, Officer in Charge, BC Highway Patrol

Wilmar Salaza was driving with his son when he saw 66 year old Robert Waite, assaulting a police officer, and Salaza jumped in right away to help. Robert Wheeler also saw the incident occur during the traffic stop, and he too, went to assist the officer. Salaza says being recognized for his efforts is overwhelming but that it was just the right thing to do.

In the aftermath of the incident, Wheeler and Salaza along with the other gentleman who assisted, remained with the suspect until other officers arrived. The police officer was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries. Robert Waite has been charged with aggravated assault and two counts of assaulting a peace officer. He was released back to the community on a release order with a future court date.
