Adventures in Healthcare looking to help students in SD57

PRINCE GEORGE- Despite the summer months amongst us the halls of CNC were packed Monday with students from SD57 taking part in the Adventures in Healthcare program this week.

The program is a partnership between CNC, the Rotary Foundation, Northern Health and UNBC. Giving students a chance to see all sides of healthcare.

“What’s really neat about this is that they get a hands-on experience and what we try to do is make it as immersive as possible for them,” said Dr. Tammy Klassen-Ross, a health psychologist at UNBC.

Students at CNC were taken through eight different lab environments, including practical nursing and medical radiography. Where the students did everything from giving a tetanus shot to see how fast they could piece together a skeleton.

With 2023 being a unique time for the healthcare industry with staff shortages throughout the system, CNC Hopes this is just the first step in many young careers.

“We would like to have our students who are grown in Prince George, stay in Prince George, be educated in Prince George. Live work and play in Prince George and contribute to quality health care experiences in the North,” says Dr. Tamara Chambers-Richards, the dean of health sciences at CNC.

The Adventures in Healthcare program which started Monday morning will run until Wednesday, May 10.
