PRINCE GEORGE- It was a lengthy council meeting Monday night. One of the items discussed was a potential new turf all-weather facility.

Masich Place Stadium hosts many organizations including the UNBC soccer teams, the Prince George Kodiaks and Prince George Track and Field.

The conversation surrounding new facilities started earlier in the year when the Prince George Kodiaks approached the council about getting help to finance a new space to train. The city council ultimately decided against loaning the club up to 600 thousand Monday night, Instead looking into a civic turf field for all to use, which one user says would make life easier for everyone involved including the Kodiaks.

“The facility is very popular, and although not all of us use the turf, all of us use the facility,” said Elena Thomas, the president of Prince George Track and Field. ” I know that football and soccer would definitely benefit from that, another turf surface would make things easier.”

The Question of locations was discussed at council with the first thoughts being along the carrie jane grey corridor. Regarding what the new facility could look like, Prince George Track and Field are hoping for something available all year.

“It would be nice to be able to start our season indoor,” said Thomas. ” we do our best to deal with winter training from January to March at Northern Sport but it is limited, so anybody training for competition is going to want something that would be accessible year-round.”

Along with helping the organizations in town city councillor, Tim Bennett hopes a new facility would bring the entire Province to the Northern Capital. Hosting more events such as the 2022 BC Summer hosted in Prince George last July.
