Unknown if Northern BC cancer care patients will end up in USA for treatment

PRINCE GEORGE – As wait times creep beyond the acceptable benchmark, the BC government will be using radiation treatment clinics in Bellingham. Washington to help meet demand.

BC’s Minister of Health Adrian Dix announced plans to send eligible cancer patients south of the border on Monday afternoon. Dix said when the opportunity presented itself the province did not hesitate.

Over the next two years, approximately 4,800 patients will benefit from this temporary program, representing approximately 2,400 patients per year. This would provide approximately 24,000 sessions of radiation treatment over the course of the program, or 12,000 session per year.

It is unknown if Northern BC cancer patients may be headed south for treatment. CKPG News reached out to the BC Cancer Agency for comment but has not received a response.

BC United Shadow Minister for Health, Shirley Bond said despite being surprised, she was not shocked after sounding the alarm bells on the situation months ago.

“After years of dodging questions and downplaying the serious concerns of British Columbians, this announcement from the NDP is a stunning admission of the dire state of B.C. health care,” said Bond.

Acceptable wait times for radiation therapy are within 4 weeks of being ‘ready’ for treatment. In BC, the percentage of cases being able to be met within the threshold has been on the decline for months.

“B.C.’s cancer care system used to be recognized as one of the best in the world, but now it is among the worst in the country,” added Bond. “I’m glad these measures will give more British Columbians timely access to desperately needed treatment, but it’s absolutely devastating that the NDP has to send these patients across international borders for the care they should be able to get in B.C. Imagine facing radiation treatment far from home, in another country, without your support system. It just shouldn’t be this way.”
