Road Rehab getting underway

PRINCE GEORGE – Work has begun on the annual road works, with Council approving $6.1 million in the budget for that work. And, now that the asphalt plants are up and running once again, the City has identified some of its top priorities for attention this year.

“The biggest one in terms of lane kilometres as well as dollars is Massey Drive from the Winnipeg-Carney intersection to Westwood,” explains Mick Jones, Supervisor of Roads. “So they’re the main kind of arterial routes that are going to see some attention this summer.”

The final budget of $6.1 million is an increase of $600,000 over the previous year. And, Jones says, while it’s a boost, it really only addresses inflationary increases, but it depends on the project.

“It kind of goes with inflation, but also kind of depends on the rehab strategy that we’re doing. Some roads, if we can just do an overlay, obviously it’s cheaper than doing a mill infill or a pulverized crushing pave. So depending on the rehabilitation strategy, on the condition of the road and the area of the road, that’ll kind of dictate kind of how much additional money may or may not be spent.”

And sidewalks were identified as a high priority during Council budget discussions.

“We’ve got a number of sidewalk rehabilitation projects going on. We’ve got one new sidewalk project on Davis between our speaker and the new subdivision. We’ve already completed one down on Victoria Street from 23rd Avenue to Strathcona and they’re working on Johnson Street now from 10th Avenue to 15th Avenue. So, yeah, there’s no shortage of candidates.

“We kind of try to do the work throughout the city, so everybody does see some value of the capital expenditure program.”

So while some of the smaller works are already underway, residents, motorists in particular, should brace themselves for yet another busy season of traffic disruptions.
