O’Grady Road to be officially changed to Dakelh Ti in August

PRINCE GEORGE — Two years after a request was made by the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, the City of Prince George will officially rename O’Grady Road during the week August 14, 2023.

“The Lheidli T’enneh First Nation has confirmed their choice of the new road name to be Dakelh Ti, which means First Nation Road. This name acknowledges all Dakelh people who attended the school located along O’Grady Road (previous O’Grady High School), and Residential schools in general,” reads the report to council ahead of Monday’s regular council meeting.

“The recent discovery of the remains of hundreds of children at residential schools in BC and Saskatchewan has heightened the awareness of the crimes committed at Catholic-Church-run residential schools,” reads the 2021 letter to council from the first nation requesting the name change. “The fact that Bishop O’Grady who O’Grady road is named for, played a key role in the administration of residential schools in BC while deaths and abuse of children occurred, is reason enough for the change.”

Prince George City Council approved the name change back in June 2022, and Monday’s report is for the purpose of updating council on the timeline.

“Properties which will be directly impacted (Exhibit “A” – Subject Parcels) by the road name change will be provided with a mailout notification 6 weeks in advance of the change. As part of the notification, property owners will be provided with a list of recommended areas they will need to change their address (ie. ICBC, Service BC, Service Canada, banking, insurance, and private utilities companies),” reads the report to council.
