PRINCE GEORGE — Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and we learn more in this week’s to your health.

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid found in the body. It’s made in the muscles and transferred by the blood into different organ systems. Glutamine is a building block for making proteins in the body. It’s also needed to make other amino acids and glucose.

During times of extreme stress, the kind you experience after heavy exercise or an injury, your body may need more glutamine than it can make.

“Glutamine is an amino acid that your body depletes first, especially when you’re exercising. So it’s responsible for muscle soreness when you’re depleted. So typically, anybody who’s going to be doing resistance training, exercising and doing anything that’s taxing their body, it’s really important to get about five or ten grams of glutamine put back into your system every single day.” – Cara Roberts, Owner, Active Body Nutrition

Glutamine can also help your immune system function and may be needed for normal brain function and digestion.

“Your stomach lining actually uses L glutamine to create a strong foundation and a strong lining within your stomach. So supplementation is always key in the form of powders…With the way that our body utilizes it and our lack of getting glutamine within our food sources, it is important to supplement it with sports supplements.” – Cara Roberts, Owner, Active Body Nutrition
