PRINCE GEORGE- Days removed from last week’s thunderstorms in Prince George, our area is feeling the impacts.

As of Monday afternoon, more than 480 wildfires are active, of those 218 are in the Prince George Fire Centre.

That number compares to just one year ago when the Prince George Fire Centre had only seen 68 wildfires total. The BC Wildfire Service says that the extreme weather can be blamed for the rise in numbers.

“Once lightning strikes, the ground can smoulder and a fire can’t be detected for hours or even days,” said Julia Caranci with the BC Wildfire Service.

The fires can and are leading to alerts being sent out by the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, Sunday afternoon a notice was sent out for the Noonlang Lake area wildfire.

The Regional District is encouraging all to be ready in case of emergency with items such as bottled water, non-perishable food items, phone chargers, and essential documents.
