Drought conditions putting pressure on Prince George Animal Rescue

PRINCE GEORGE- While the rain in the region over the last two weeks has been helpful, many are still struggling with the impacts of the drought conditions.

One of those struggling is Prince George Animal Rescue. The rescue would normally grow their livestock feed but simply cannot under the current conditions.

The limited amount of feed is a problem throughout British Columbia and is being blamed on the drought conditions in all corners of the province. Those who can grow hay are either keeping it for their livestock or selling it at a premium.

“Prices are going from what would normally be about $100 a bale to $200 or $300 a bale,” said Nicola Redpath, the owner of Prince George Animal Rescue.

With the limited supply, Prince George Animal Rescue is being forced to look out of province which adds trucking costs to the equation putting even more pressure on the organization.

The provincial government has put measures in place to support farmers throughout the drought. However, Prince George Animal Rescue isn’t a farm which is why they are looking to the community for support.

“It’s mostly trying to get connections to locate the hay,” said Redpath. “Of course, anyone who wants to donate is more than welcome too.”
