PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Airport will be receiving $300,000 in funding thanks to Northern Development’s Economic Infrastructure program.

The $300,000 was approved for equipment storage expansion. The expanded equipment storage will ensure that there is space to properly store the new runway sweeper, which is an essential piece of equipment for airfield maintenance and airport safety.

The new runway sweeper is for winter conditions, and it will allow for efficiency as 2 pieces of equipment had to be used to clear the runway during the winter.

“It’s for snow and ice control. It has a 22 foot plow blade on the front of it and a 20 foot broom that swivels is in the center. It is a pretty cool piece of equipment and what it allows you to do is the blade goes along and takes the initial layer of snow off and then the broom is churning and gets you down to pavement. Whereas before we were using two pieces of equipment to accomplish this task, this single piece allows us to keep that runway in really good shape and our aprons as well. So the whole maneuvering space for airplanes will be in will we’ll be able to keep it in better condition.” – Gordon Duke, President & CEO, Prince George Airport Authority

The completion of the project will provide sufficient space for equipment to be stored in covered, heated storage year-round, eliminating any need to store equipment outside in harsh conditions that may interfere with its operability.
