PRINCE GEORGE — For many, getting three square meals in a day is not a problem, but you still might have circumstances that might make it hard to prepare a full meal some days. We learn more about meal replacements in this week’s to your health.

Meal replacement systems are meant to help you get a meal’s worth of nutrients when you don’t have the time or access to enjoy a proper meal. The most popular alternatives include shakes, bars, and powders.

“So in order to make something a meal replacement, you do have to have carbohydrates or you have to have fats in it for energy. So if someone wants to have just a shake and they want to just get a protein powder, that’s not actually going to give them energy for their day, The way that something that will be more of a whole foods product would be. So in order to have a good meal replacement, I would say whole foods over sugar for the energy source is going to be key for good health.” – Cara Roberts, Owner, Active Body Nutrition

Everybody has different nutritional needs, not all meal replacements are created equal. Therefore, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to replacing a meal, but Cara gives some tips on where a good starting point might be.

“I would like to have a good ratio of having protein to carb with some fats in it as well would be really important. So if someone wants to have a shake, they could do a protein powder and also grind of oats in a blender, add some peanut butter to it, give it some extra calories that are going to come from energy sources so that they can actually have a productive day, gain weight, whatever their goals are.” – Cara Roberts, Owner, Active Body Nutrition

If you pick up a meal replacement at a store, and are unsure of what to get or don’t know what is in the product, always ask, because it’s important to know what’s going in your body.

“It’s not necessarily just that a calorie is a calorie. You want to make sure that you’re getting the maximum benefits and actually choosing stuff that’s going to be good for your body to give you energy rather than just going for the mainstream commercial stuff.” – Cara Roberts, Owner, Active Body Nutrition
