Grizzly found dead

Mystery surrounds demise of Bear Lake’s roaming grizzlies: Conservation Officials investigate

PRINCE GEORGE – A young grizzly bear roaming the Bear Lake community recently has been found dead. The Conservation Officer Service reports finding the young grizzly in a public area.

A resident of Bear Lake took a video of a young grizzly interacting with a neighbour’s dog over two weeks ago. And as the CO service tells CKPG News, it was one of two grizzlies hanging out in the community.

While the grizzlies were seen roaming the community, the COs asked residents to secure unnatural bear attractants and to make the grizzlies feel unwelcome.

“ Hazing the bears, making noise, making the bears generally feel uncomfortable in the neighbourhoods.”

In late July, the CO service stopped getting reports about the bears. Therefore the decision to remove the bear traps was made as there were plans in the works to relocate the animals.

Then within the past week, there was a report of a dead grizzly on the old elementary school field.

Any information individuals report to the RAPP Line can help the COs determine the cause of the grizzly’s death, even if the animal was killed in self-defence.
