Police incident on Highway 16 and Upland under investigation

PRINCE GEORGE —Update: RCMP say at approximately 10:50 Tuesday night, its members responded to a report of a hit and run involving a pedestrian in the 2200 block of Upland Street.

While a member was investigating the incident, the suspect vehicle returned and accelerated towards the member and a witness who were both able to avoid being struck.

The member attempted to stop the suspect vehicle near the intersection of Hwy 16 W and Hwy 97 when the suspect swerved into the members police vehicle forcing the police vehicle into a light standard causing extensive damage to the police vehicle.

The suspect rolled his vehicle which came to a stop on it’s roof. The member sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment and later released. The suspect was uninjured and taken into custody.

The suspect is facing numerous charges including impaired driving and has since been released from custody with a later court date. The investigation is ongoing and the Prince George RCMP are asking members of the public who witnessed the incident and have not spoken to the police or have video footage to contact the detachment at 250-561-3300.

Earlier: A police incident closed Highway 16 at Upland Street early this Wednesday morning.

Drive BC reported the road closed at 2:21 a.m. Wednesday morning. It reopened at around 6.

RCMP is expected to release details into the matter later Wednesday.
